Keep OtO running smoothly for years to come by properly winterizing your device
If you're in a region where temperatures drop below freezing in the winter months, you must store the OtO device indoors to prevent it from freezing and being damaged. Follow these directions to help preserve your battery and avoid cold-weather related issues.
When should I winterize my OtO?
For those in colder climates, as you winterize your outdoor faucets, this is a great time to also winterize your OtO device to prevent it from damage and keep it running smoothly for years to come. Be sure to winterize your outdoor faucets (and OtO) by the time low temperatures are forecast to fall below 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.7 degrees Celsius), just in case the actual temperature dips lower than the prediction.
Even if you live in a 'warmer' climate like California or Texas, if you experience temperatures below freezing, it's a good idea to keep OtO indoors to prevent irreversible damage. Frozen water can wreak havoc on internal parts.
💡Tip: The OtO app will remind you when your area is nearing it's frost season!
How to winterize OtO
Step 1 - Detach the hose
If you're having difficulty detaching the hose, it could be because of built-up pressure. You can use the Winter Mode workflow in the app to help you depressurize the hose, making it very easy to detach.
1. Start the Winter Mode workflow via the home page alert, or via the device settings.
2. Turn off the water source.
3. In the app, follow the directions to release hose pressure, making it easy to remove OtO from the hose.
Step 2 - Detach from the bracket & drain
1. Firmly remove the bracket from the device. Having trouble?
2. Tilt the device with the water inlet facing down, gently shake to let the device drain completely of water.
Step 3 - Charge OtO
- Place OtO somewhere that does not go below freezing temperatures. A basement is usually best.

FAQs
Can I just leave my device outside for the winter?
Freezing temperatures can severely damage the battery and internal components, not to mention void the warranty. We do not recommend leaving your device outside if temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
Can I just cover OtO over the winter?
Cold temperatures can still reach OtO and any water inside the device, even if it is covered. To be safe, we highly recommend draining the unit and keeping it indoors.
Do I have to charge my device over the winter?
In order to have a smooth set-up in the spring, the best way to preserve the device's battery is to keep it plugged in all winter long.
If you cannot keep all your devices plugged in all winter long, keep the solar panel blocked with an opaque object like a blanket. When you're ready to use OtO again, keep the solar panel covered and charge the unit overnight. This will avoid battery issues.
