How to set Schedules

Learn how to read your OtO watering schedules, as well as get the answer to commonly asked questions.

How scheduling works

Every zone you set up can be linked to a Schedule. A Schedule has a single start time, and you can add multiple zones to it, even zones from different OtO devices. Zones in the same schedule water one after another, in an order you control.

How to edit your schedule

Go to the Schedules page to see all of your schedules, and tap into one and tap edit to edit it. Alternatively, you can create one if you want to.

From here you can:

  • Set the start time

  • Choose how often it runs

  • Adjust Weather Intelligence (Rain Skip and Wind Skip)

  • Decide which zones water and how much — including zones from different OtO devices
  • Reorder zones by dragging and dropping them into the order you want them to water

Zones

You can choose which zones you want to water for each schedule. You can also choose how much to water each zone:

Each OtO device can only water one zone at a time. Within a single schedule, zones water one after another in the order you set — drag to reorder them.

Repeat schedule

Each Schedule can use one of the following:

  • Every day
  • Odd Days — Water only on odd days of the month.
  • Even Days — Water only on even days of the month.
  • Weekly on select days — Set exactly which days of the week to water. For example, every Monday
  • Custom Interval — Water every few days (e.g. every 3 days) instead of picking specific days of the week.

Weather Intelligence

Weather Intelligence lets OtO decide to water or not based on conditions like rain and wind. It's recommended, since it helps conserve water. Weather Intelligence is set per schedule, so all zones in a schedule share the same Rain Skip and Wind Skip settings.

Read more about the Weather Intelligence features here:

If you disable Wind Skip and Rain Skip:

  • OtO will water exactly according to the schedule you've set, regardless of weather conditions.
  • It will simply divide the goal weekly watering limit across the number of scheduled watering events in a week.

FAQs & Troubleshooting

What are conflicting schedules?

If two schedules could run at the same time, you'll see a Conflicting tag on the Schedule page. This is a soft warning. It doesn't stop either schedule from running in most cases.

Within one schedule, zone order is guaranteed. Across two conflicting schedules, order is not guaranteed, and it's possible a zone won't run as expected. To avoid this, give one of the schedules a different start time.

How should I schedule multiple OtO units?

You have two options:

  • Want your devices to water one after another automatically? Add all their zones to the same schedule. Reorder zones as needed. They'll run sequentially regardless of which device they're on.
  • Want two devices to be able to water at the same time? Put them in different schedules. You may see a soft Conflicting tag if the schedules overlap. That's expected, and safe to ignore if running them simultaneously is what you want. Just know that most homes don't have the water pressure to support two devices running at once, which can cause zones to water poorly or stop early.

When is the ideal time to water?

OtO is designed to be set it and forget it, so most of the time, you do NOT need to worry about changing the watering schedule often! That said, if you need to make changes, here are some tips:

When to schedule watering events:

  • Set your schedule to water in the morning to reduce the effects of evaporation.
  • Check your local municipality or homeowners' association for local restrictions, if any.
  • If you have no local restrictions, generally speaking watering deeply 2-3 times per week (not daily) at about 1 1/4" per week is preferable.

Why was my event cancelled due to weather?

An event may be cancelled due to weather if:

  • 5 minutes before the scheduled watering application event, the sum of local precipitation in the past 24 hours and the forecasted precipitation in the next 24 hours exceeds the threshold you have configured for the zone.
  • Wind speeds exceeded the threshold you have configured for the zone.

My weather forecast is incorrect.

Please check the following if your weather forecast is different from what you are experiencing in your area:

  • Ensure your device is online and well-connected to Wi-Fi. If it is disconnected or in Winter Mode, your local weather forecast may not update.
  • Ensure the Zip Code you've used to set up your account is correct. You can edit your Zip Code from the Account Settings Menu.
  • Your OtO connects its weather data from third-party weather stations. There are thousands of weather stations reporting to our weather service and sometimes errors can occur. If you spot a weather discrepancy, let us know using the 'Submit an Issue' function in the app.

Need a way to be able to look at our zones without going to the edit menu.

I agree with Craig. You have a crazy rule set for weather determination but have the most clunky and cumbersome calendar view, if it can even be called that. I have 4 OTO’s and 8 zones that I have to manually go in and out of and record on an external spreadsheet if I want to make changes. It would make more sense to have a shared calendar, at least for viewing, outside of the configuration editing menu.

How does OtO handle two zones scheduled at the same time? If I schedule two of my zones on one device for 6:00AM, does it delay one of the zones until later? Or does it only water one zone and not water the other? How are the decisions made in either case?
